In Merzouga, as in many regions of the Moroccan desert, the sand bath also called pharmacotherapy, or even sand therapy is a practice of alternative medicine adopted by many people affected by rheumatism ailments. The sand bath takes its name simply from the method of practice itself, consisting in burying a good part of one’s body in the very hot sand of the Merzouga Sahara. Arthrosis, neuralgia, vertebral or limb pain, chronic rheumatism, diseases joints, polyarthritis, lower back pain, muscle pain, skin diseases, overweight, and blood circulation problems.
The sand bath is not recommended for people who are too old, hypertensive, suffering from arteriosclerosis, diabetics, kidney failure or with cardiovascular complications. Medical clearance is required.
